First Professional Services (formerly Headway Workforce Solutions) is currently seeking an Administrative Assistant to work for a nonprofit organization in Newport News to support their Utility and Housing Assistant programs.

Hours will be: 8am – 5pm, Monday – Friday

This position will be a contract position through December 14th with the possibility of an extension.

Salary: $12 – $14 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.


  • Previous experience working in Human Services, Social Services or public housing preferred but not required
  • Bachelor’s degree helpful in Human Services, Psychology or Social Services with a strong desire to help the community and work for a non-profit organization
  • Experience with public assistance program eligibility a plus
  • Must have intermediate knowledge of Word and Excel
  • Position will require a valid Virginia driver’s license to drive between two office locations when needed
  • Must be willing to consent to a criminal background check, drug screen and credit check.


  • Answer incoming calls and provide status updates on housing or utility assistance
  • Assist with directing callers seeking public assistance to complete application process online
  • Data entry of applicant and application information
  • Prepare and maintain confidential case records and files.
  • Document all interactions with clients
  • Receive, prepare and complete various forms, reports or other documents
  • Support management team with performing administrative duties
